This is another of our exciting family adventures in Guatemala. This time my husband and I decided that we wanted to take our son for a visit to Semuc Champey and the Lanquin Caves. For that we had to stay in the nearby town of Cobn. But let’s talk about the town first: Cobn is a beautiful town located in the Alta Verapaz Department of Guatemala. It is located 1320 meters above sea level so it gets a bit chilly at night. It is also one of the major coffee producers of the country. Plus it is located among mountains and forests that guard one of Guatemala’s treasures: the Monja Blanca Orchid. (this country’s national flower).

Plants are commonly found in homes across North America and Europe. With an endless supply of types available on the market, there is a variety for everyone. Unlike many things, adding the living touch of a plant to your home or office can be very inexpensive, with little to no cost to keep. The world underneath the ocean contains millions of unknown monsters. These creatures are not monsters with scary appearances but are named monsters because of the huge size of their kind. Deep into the ocean, everything is pretty much dark. This is because light cannot penetrate into such depth. There is also shortage of oxygen deep into the ocean. Some animals have the ability to create their own light. They do this to attract their prey and keep off predators. Apart from lacking light and oxygen, underwater fish and plants have adapted themselves to these conditions. We may notice that underwater plants lack the usual green color due to absence of sunlight for photosynthesis. This alien world contains endless wonders we are yet to see.

Eco-tourism has become very popular these days amongst vacationers. Exploration of nature has become a major component of tourism. Initially the tourism industry concentrated on certain hot spots and promoted them brusquely, often as a place for mass tourism. But then a section of the vacationers prefer to skip these sites and move to as yet unexplored areas. They anticipate experiencing the unforeseen. Well visited tourist spots are most often too well organized. These could be wild life sanctuaries, beaches, mountains, water falls or rivers. But these astute vacationers opt to visit and experience the undeveloped tourist spots so to say. They know it means certain degree of hardship that they will have to endure. They arrive at such spots cycling, biking, trekking or hiking. Once the site is identified, they would like to settle down there for a few days and nights.

The popularity of boat based whale watching has exploded around the world in the last fifteen years. Thousands of people are traveling and vacationing with the hope of seeing whales as their primary goal. Blame it on “Free Willy” or our curious human nature, but whales and people have been interacting a lot more lately. Is this good? Do both species gain from this interaction? Are we harming the whales? Is it education or exploitation?

Hoodia gordonii is an herb found in the Kalahari Desert. Though reported to be used by the San Bushmen of Southern Africa for a variety of uses as a medicinal plant, its use as an appetite suppressant became popular in recent years. Hoodia is able to make you feel that you are not hungry by imitating the effect of glucose on the nerve cells in the brain. It makes you feel that you are full. You lose your urge to eat. In fact, the hoodia effect is much more powerful than glucose. The San Bushmen removes the stem of hoodia, the flowers, roots and spines, and peel away the outer skin before consuming hoodia when they went for a hunt which last for about a week. This is to stifle the urge to eat and drink.

The best place to spend your leisure time is the outdoors. During vacation time it is a good thing to get out of your house, rather out of your city and town and head for some location in the mountains or just the country side. This way you and your kids will get close to the nature.
